| leave a reply day 130 & 131 posted on july 24, 2018 by admin reply day 130 – wednesday’s highlight of the day in the haka valley – dave and alex were mustering some sheep between paddocks and a couple of new born lambs couldn’t keep up with their mothers and got left behind. david took up the challenge of trying to find the mothers of the lost kids to return them. as most mothers would have been looking for their children, one mother was easy to spot looking distressed, however, the other mother was nowhere to be seen, clearly not too fussed it’s baby was mia. after putting the baby lamb down to run around and search for mum itself the mother finally appeared. check out our insta video! day 131 – an early start for today with another lot of lambs going off to the works from kakanui, taking in the amazing sights of the sunrise over the ocean and sunset over the mountains. posted in b l o g | tagged farm livin' , kaka farm , working hard or hardly working? | leave a reply days 122 – 129 posted on july 23, 2018 by admin reply howdy, david here, on the days 122 and 123, after we’d arrived back to the haka valley, we got stuck into cleaning up duties for wednesday’s visit from the auditor. the puppies are doing really well, although we had to make some puppy-proof modifications to storm’s kennel to accommodate them a bit better. then, we did some final tidying up and feeding out to the cattle and sheep. day 124 begun with the daily ritual of feeding out with lexi the land cruiser and then going to shift some sheep while the inspector inspected… safe to say it was all well and good, & a pass! as expected alex and jean were given the forever changing rules of the farming world today but, all in all, with a few things to do here and there, they don’t have to worry about another one until 2-3 years time. to finish the day off, another change in work type sprung itself on us and we worked with the last of the light to do some fencing repairs. day 125 consisted of more feeding out and stock work, as well as shifting cattle closer to the house and doing yet some more fencing. on day 126 we had some helpers, jean and alex’s daughter and her partner, to help separate the older calves from their mothers so the expecting mums can give birth to their next lot of calves and look after them. the mother cows can get quite stressed out and act defensively, hence needing extra hands, fortunately with more experience. the sturdy working dogs worked extremely hard and copped it from the cattle, getting kicked and run over. they well and truly earned their tucker for the day though. these dogs are as tough as nails and are regularly put through this in their farm life. sunset day 127 kicked off with the everlasting job of feeding out. after some smoko i set out for a sunday drive due west, towards mount cook. unexplored territory that we haven’t encountered yet! first stop was the impressive waitaki dam. it was the second hydro dam installed in the south island and used to power most of the island back when it was first built. as are most dams, this one was a very impressive piece of engineering considering it was built in 1934. as usual, the water was crystal clear and shining blue with the sun on it, as is just about all the rivers and lakes are over here – one of our favourite features about new zealand. further along the waitaki river is 5 more hydro dams where the road runs along side them as well as over some dams, thereby, making it an enjoyable drive. before i knew it i was in the mackenzie country which is notorious for its scenic-ness and it did live up to that expectation, that’s for sure! the southern alps, topped with snow, sat on the horizon dwarfing the country towns. i arrived at twizel to take a drive around lake tautaniwha, where the water was an incredible shade of turquoise blue which sat nicely with the pine trees on the waters edge and the huge southern alps in the background. day 128 was another day of feeding out in a very foggy terrain, shifting sheep from way down the back to bring up near the shearing shed as the shearer’s are due here tomorrow. day 129 fell on the tuesday where the shearer’s got through all the sheep they needed to get through, quicker then expected as well. with a delicious roast pork for lunch from the famous pig that david shot. meanwhile the previously separated cow calves felt they really missed their mothers, so, they decided to push through a fence to mix back in with them. we needed to get all of them down into the yards to separate them, again, then we fixed the fence up! meanwhile, back in australia, ash and her sisters visited their mum and stepdad in taree where she also picked up some extra work with her beautiful opsm colleagues where they made her feel right back at home again! posted in b l o g | tagged farm livin' , haka valley , working hard or hardly working? | leave a reply days 120 & 121 posted on july 11, 2018 by admin reply as we all know, sunday should be spent with family and that’s exactly what ash ended up doing but it should also be the dedicated day for having a sleep in which is where david found himself. he also made time for watching alex and jean’s grand kids playing sport and swapping our now finished harry potter novel for ‘orphan x’ at a roadside book swap that was over-flowing with books. then he went to the farm to do some maintenance and got to use an electric hand piece for the cleaning up of the sheep pre-selected for dinner. on monday, ash got to finally catch up with great friends, while back in kakanui, dave was out to the yards for an early morning dagging session, again using the electric hand pieces to trim around the sheep’s bums and their rear legs to keep them clean before they go to the works. alex gets paid top dollar when the sheep are free from poop… then they moved on to trying to track down a fence short within the electric fence system. david’s spare time at the beach house involved getting stu
